DECEMBER EVENTS

We are all getting excited for Winter Break!
During the last 5 days of school we have many fun
activities planned. Thursday, December 15th is
Polar Express Day for 1st grade. We will be reading
the book, doing some activities that go along with the
story, and watching the movie. Your child is allowed
to wear their pajamas to school that day. It is only
for 1st grade, so if you have an older child they will
not be wearing pajamas. Friday, December 16th is
Winter Craft Day for Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade.
In the morning, we will be making different winter crafts
in each of the classrooms in our pod. We could use several
volunteers for this event. If you are available on
Friday morning, please let me know. One item that we
need for both events is mini marshmallows. If you are
able to send in a bag of marshmallows, please send them
in to school before Thursday. I would really appreciate it.

Tidepool Unit

We are a few weeks into our Tidepool Unit. The kids

have been enjoying each of the tidepool animals that

we have studied. We have learned about crabs, sea

anemones, sand dollars, and sea stars. Our class

welcomed a wonderful guest speaker named Bobbi Snead.

She taught us all about sea stars. Ask your child

what they know about these sea animals. They might

suprise you with some information that you did not

even know.

Harvest Party October 31st

Please check your child's backpack for information about our Harvest Party.

We need 30 cookies, 30 napkins, 30 cups, and 3 gallons of juice. I would

really appreciate if parent's are able to provide some of these things for

our party. We are going to be having a very fun day. Our morning is going

to be spent doing Fall Harvest Academic Activities with the other 1st and

2nd grade classes. In the afternoon we have an all school assembly with

a fun reader's theatre. Our party is going to be very simple. It will

be from 2:30-3:00. We are going to eat our treats and play a class game.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are able to bring some of

the items we need. Thanks!

Insect Inquiry

Please check your child's purple folder for information

regarding the Insect Inquiry project. The project is

due the last week of October. I am so excited to see

what these kids can come up with. When you are helping

your child please let them guide the ideas. You don't

know how many times we have had children turn in projects

that their parents made. It is so important for your

kids to have ownership of there work. Thanks for

helping your children succeed!

Finally Reading

We are finally able to read during our reading rotations.

We practiced our rotations for 2 weeks without me doing a

reading group at the reading table. This is the first week

that we have been able to start practicing reading strategies

and reading books in our groups. It is definitely a

work in progress, but we are starting to get there.

We also started doing Math Rotations. I have 3 groups

that I group based on how many numbers they were able to

write. There was a very huge gap between some kids who

could not write 1-10, kids who were writing to 20,

kids who could write up to 100 but with many backwards numbers,

and kids who were able to write past 100. The rotations help

to reach the needs of all the students. Each math topic I will

assess and then group them accordingly. Takes a lot of extra

work, but in the end, it should really help with their math skills.

Chapman Hill Jogathon Tomorrow!

Please make sure that your kids wear sneakers tomorrow!

We run from 1:20-1:50. The kids will be wearing their

Jogathon shirts. I will hand the shirts out in the

morning. It would be great if the kids wear shorts or

pants that are easy to run in.

Jogathon pledge packets went home last week. They are

not due back to school until next week. Please help

your child collect pledges to support our school. This

is our only fundraiser of the year. All of the money

goes back directly to the kids and classrooms. The

teachers and kids appreciate all of the great things

that the Jogathon provides.

Homework! Homework! Homework!

I will be sending our first homework on Monday. Please

check your child's purple folder. Inside the front

cover will be a monthly homework calendar for October.

Your child needs to do the activities for week 1 and

turn in any papers by Friday. Also, book bags will

be coming home this week. Look for a ziplock bag

with a book in it. Directions for home reading

will be placed inside the bag. Thanks for your support

in helping your child become a better reader!
